Thoughts from a 90 year old lady ...

1. Life isn’t fair, but it’s still good.
2. When in doubt, just take the next small step.
3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.
4. Your job won’t take care of you when you are sick. Your friends and parents will. Stay in touch!
5. Pay off your credit cards every month.
6. You don’t have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.
7. Cry with someone. It’s more healing than crying alone.
8. It’s OK to get angry with God. He can take it.
9. Save for retirement starting with your first paycheck.
10. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.
11. Make peace with your past so it won’t screw up the present.
12. It’s OK to let your children see you cry.
13. Don’t compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about.
14. If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn’t be in it.
15. Everything can change in the blink of an eye. But don’t worry; God never blinks.
16. Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.
17. Get rid of anything that isn’t useful, beautiful or joyful.
18. Whatever doesn’t kill you really does make you stronger.
19. It’s never too late to have a happy childhood. But the second one is up to you and no one else.
20. When it comes to going after what you love in life, don’t take no for an answer.
21. Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie. Don’t save it for a special occasion.
22. Over-prepare, then go with the flow.
23. Be eccentric now. Don’t wait for old age to wear purple.
24. The most important sex organ is the brain.
25. No one is in charge of your happiness but you.
26. Frame every so-called disaster with these words ‘In five years, will this matter?’
27. Always choose life.
28. Forgive everyone everything.
29. What other people think of you is none of your business.
30. Time heals almost everything. Give time time.
31. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.
32. Don’t take yourself so seriously. No one else does.
33. Believe in miracles.
34. God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did or didn’t do.
35. Don’t audit life. Show up and make the most of it now.
36. Growing old beats the alternative — dying young.
37. Your children get only one childhood.
38. All that truly matters in the end is that you loved.
39. Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere.
40. If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else’s, we’d grab ours back.
41. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.
42. The best is yet to come.
43. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.
44. Yield.
45. Life isn’t tied with a bow, but it’s still a gift.

No more

...yet National Awareness Month continues. The National Stroke Association website has so much more on it yet it is overwhelming at times. It becomes too much to deal with. Thus I have conveyed the most poignant points that I could find knowing that you may or may not read them, knowing that you may or may not pay attention to them, knowing that you may or may not care that these could be you.

But I have to try.

I have to try and convince one person to change one habit, to learn one new fact, to understand me a little bit, to strive to improve themselves and in the progress of doing this mitigate some of their risk. I watch people do things every day that make my heart cry and die a little bit when they are those I care about. I know that what they are doing is not healthy but whom am I to speak.

I am someone who took too long to realize, too long to make a change, procrastinated too many times. That is what I think it boils down to for many. I think you know and are aware but you wait, thinking you can push it off until tomorrow and that eventually you will make a change. I was that person, still am that person in some aspects but I am changing. I chose to change for I know first hand that there may not be a tomorrow and need to do what I can to improve my world, improve me, correct some of the wrongs that I can correct and prepare for that which will come.

I cannot ask you to change for that change has to come from you. I can only show you what I have learned. Give you words that show what I have found and know that I believe them. I will post no more about strokes this month, the controllable risks or any of that. I cannot as it makes me sad. It takes me to a place where I was. I am not there now, but to be reminded day in and day out with this is sometimes too much. I am faced with enough daily reminders and challenges as it is.

So thank you for reading, those who read, and know that I appreciate any time that you put into this.

Peace ... Namaste

Stumbled upon

Creative gratitude is an attitude. It is magnetic and will draw good to you. It is good therapy, a road to happiness. Thankfulness is a way of living more fully. Be thankful for your health and you will have health in more abundance. Be thankful for the love you receive and it will be increased. Be thankful for your success and you'll open doors to further achievement. Be thankful for your friends and more friends will come to you. Be thankful for beauty and you'll experience it more deeply. Creative gratitude is a force for harmony and goodwill. It brings people together in love and understanding. It is high on the scale of creative qualities to be practiced day in and day out in our moment-to-moment contacts.

Monday....eh

Well even though it is the second day of my work week Monday is still Monday. However.....

Loads of studies show that Monday is really the best time to kick off any get-healthy regimen for this simple reason: it represents a clean slate, which is vital when it comes to embracing a smarter lifestyle plus there’s always another one right around the corner. Not convinced? Here are a few more reasons Monday is the greatest day when it comes to your health:

It’s a fresh start

Just like Friday always begs the question: what will I do this weekend? (i.e., eat, drink and be merry), Monday just naturally lends itself to a more practical point of view—it’s the day you assess your workload, appointments, grocery shopping. Take stock of the week ahead with your new healthy habits in mind and plan accordingly.

It’s a ‘trigger’ day

Studies actually show that when it comes to embarking on any healthy activity, if you have a so-called trigger day—a set date or reminder—you’re more likely to follow through. Even better? Monday rolls around every 7 days, as opposed to say, once year, like Jan 1st, so even if you get off track, another Monday is just around the corner.

So even though Monday will be Monday until someone, in their infinite wisdom, changes it to a completely different day there is still some good that can come out of Monday.

Today with family

Went to the Grapevine Mills Mall today and I realized something. I have a phobia. I have a phobia of enclosed malls. I have worked in retail for years and ran two mall stores. But I realized when talking to my mother this evening that I really have a phobia that results in a cold clammy sweat when I go into a mall. I know I have gone to malls over the years and realize that outside of Kaahumanu Mall, which is open air, I have always just gone into a mall for a purpose....gone and got out. In the last 4 years I have gone to malls, and actually walked around in them, maybe 5 times. I have gone more but to go quick in to one destination and that it that.

The introspection is interesting right now. I am interested in enlightenment about myself and find that some of it is really eye opening.

See ya

Running low

Confession 1: had a burger tonight - just a little one but I was famished. I had a salmon burger patty, cantaloupe melon and cucumber after working out and that was foolish. The fruit and vegetable are mostly water and I just did not think.

Confession 2: I have been working later and later than I should. I am taking ownership of the issues and should delegate out more.

My argument to that second one is that the work load has increased by 40 percent on my team this month so far and there is no let up in the immediate future. From what I understand it will virtually increase by over 50 percent in the next two months. Job security on one hand but we have already been trimmed to a number that no longer meets the needs of those whom need our help. Thus tasks that could be done by others if I had the time to train them I take upon myself. I need my July vacation soon.

Confession 3: I really would have liked the surgery to happen this Friday for two reasons. 1. I would have them performing it to offer a resolution to my stroke situation. 2. I would have been forced to take at least two days off of work and possibly more. Thus a break before my July vacation.

Confession 4: I am loving the 30 minutes on the treadmill and trying to do this 5 days a week now that there is nothing planned in my immediate future. I want to fit in a tai chi class but have yet to find one that matches my schedule so I still contemplate how to do this. I do the treadmill on my lunch break at work. I am contemplating how to fit more in my schedule but am not there yet.

Confession 5 and the last one: I am really lousy right now at making sure I get three meals in a day. That is bugging me as I need to get in three moderate meals and two small protein snacks. So I am going to keep working on this too.

A response to a thought

In regards to any frustration in my tone yesterday, I know it was there, I take full responsibility for that. Today I wake up with pain but know why. I am anchored to this house but there are two reasons for that, one of my making and one of the medical worlds undertaking. I accept both of those. I have left a message for my Doctor and know at some point I will receive a call back. Until then I move on.

My delightful friend responded to my thread yesterday and I would like to share this....

I don't want you to have to live every day wondering if another stroke could happen. Of course, in the big picture we all live with uncertainty ... I guess it's just a matter of whether we look at that in a positive way (the adventure of life) or a negative way (fear).
Of course she is right. She has always been right and I will admit that I have many times been wrong. But it took me about 3 seconds or less to think about that and here is my thought:

Well I choose to live the adventure of life. I can continue to learn along the way. I can continue to change what needs to be changed. I can continue to grow in knowledge and awareness and as the options become available face them head on.

Last night and yesterday I was unclear. Yesterday frustration ran rampant through my head. I had finally accepted a path of change but this was not the path that has been chosen for me.

Thus I begin anew ... a new adventure. A new awareness. A new beginning.

I choose life.
DBG

Everyday we make choices and each choice involves a risk. There is no right and wrong answer sheet to life. No cheat sheet that can get us past the risks. No "uber powerful God like" mode that allows us multiple tries.

We live. We breathe. We hope for tomorrow and enjoy the moment. We celebrate right now the essence of our life and those around us. We learn. We live.

If something happens we repair what we can, we learn as much as possible and we choose to live now and enjoy all that we can.

Live well my friends, live for the moment, live for today, let your life include others and just LIVE!

It is becoming a time when I need to shift priorities. I care more about my job than those around me and that frustrates me. Why do I strive to be as good as I can and do what the business needs where others do not try?

Found out today that they are going to literally put me under but not out on Thursday. Leave that to the last minute to tell me. So here I go with no time to find out how to ge the required ride home at this last minute change and my family once again steps up and hits a winning run. God bless my family for they are mine and they are excellent people.

Now that is taken care of and Corpus is truly out of the equation for this weekend. I sadly feel slightly better knowing with what they are going to do that I will be partially sedated .... enough to not want to run screaming from the room.

Saw my doc this morning and had blood pulled. It is all good. All good. Well I don't have the results yet but talking to my doctor can be a calming event. He actually told me he was extremely proud of the progress I am making with losing weight and all. We are going to have to push the second MRI until after the surgery has passed and I am healed up a bit. That is alright....not my favorite thing in the world.

Well we will have to see how it goes on Thursday.

Did I eat well again today.

Breakfast: Sausage biscuit
Lunch: pretzel chips and roasted pepper hummus
Dinner: salad with 2 oz of chicken, walnuts, raisins and goat cheese
Snack: key lime probiotic yogurt

Exercise: 1.25 miles on the treadmill at a 2.5 mile rate - 30 min burning approx 330 calories and traveled at total of 6887 steps today. (last weeks average without Sat figures was 5000 steps so this is almost 7000 steps 2 days in a row)

Right - top of the morning to you all. G'd night!

Awareness

Overdoing it.

It is a real possibility. It happens. In moving forward in a direction we sometimes become so wrapped up in that direction we ignore a warning sign here or there.

Then the trapdoor falls out from beneath us and we spiral into a downward fall of agony and pain. Too much to soon becomes a crutch. Too much to soon becomes a wheelchair. Too much too soon becomes a reason to curl up and run away from the direction of repair.

Overdoing it.

It is a possibility that we all face and walk into. It happens. But moving forward is always a risk that has to be taken. For in forward movement we see opportunity and life.

So what if the trapdoor opens and we find a discomfort. We slow down, we adjust, we adapt and then we continue forward. Slow and constant becomes our motto. Slow and constant...remember the tortoise and the hare? Slow and constant is a reason to continue the repair, continue learning and grab a hold of life coming at us.

Overdoing it.

Happens.

Adjust. adapt, go slow, be constant, take care, strive ahead, be gentle, be strong.

Overdoing it.

Is ego. But that is OK. Embrace it when it happens. Talk to it, cherish the awareness of new sensations, learn from what caused it and live for another opportunity to learn from this.

Just don't stop repairing, don't stop learning and please do not stop living!

Waking is a celebration

At the moment of waking up,
before getting out of bed,
get in touch with your breath.

Feel the various sensations in your body,
note any thoughts and feeling that may be present,
let mindfulness touch this moment.

Can you feel your breath?

Can you perceive the dawning of each in breath?

Can you enjoy the feeling of the breath freely
entering your body in this moment?

"Breathe in I smile,
breathe out I calm my body,
dwelling in the present moment,
it is a wonderful moment."

Can we change

I think fundamentally we can change. I do not know how we do it or why it happens but we do it. My dinner today was broccoli, my dark salad and the vinegar/oil dressing and then I had the rest of that stir fry concoction from yesterday. It was great the second day around. Must remember to not forget onions and water chestnuts ...oh also mushrooms to add to it next time and make it bigger so it lasts for a couple of days.

But I was contemplating just now...three.five hours after dinner that I might be a little hungry. I thought for a second about the snack machine behind me. (nothing in it should I eat) I thought nope there is nothing there. I went and refilled my 20 oz Rubbermaid bottle with water and looked at what was actually in there. The only thing that briefly caught my eye was the peanut m&m's. But only for about 5 seconds...long enough for me to think is it worth it. Then as I walked away I realized I think I am fundamentally beginning to change. I know it is not set in stone yet but I think I am learning how to make decisions that may benefit me. That is good.

Yes!

"Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet.
Only through experience of trial and suffering
can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired,
and success achieved."

My Aloha ohana Kimberly sent me this one and you know that hit the spot. That and both the really cool VM that Lisa left me this morning and the short conversation I had with her. Love you both and all the good thoughts.

I am grateful that you are in my life and here is a gratiDude dance for you. Too bad I do not have webcam :)
