it is like being on a long board off of the north shore of Maui. looking out at the ocean the land disappears and the expanse of blue is before you. any and all goals are stripped away as there becomes only one goal of survival. you scan the sea for the sets of waves and as each swell rises you determine it's strength, what it's impact will be and you try to work through the worst ones. every once in a while one sneaks up on you that you have not been able to read or see and it wipes you out. thrashes you on the corals and leaves you battered and fearful of that next one that catches you like that. those ones suck. especially when you cannot find the rhythm of the waves and the footing on your board to turn your attention to the shore and the goals that are there.
